A community that I am involved with is the sorority Tau Beta Sigma. The obligations of this community are a "process" that all members must go through as a candidate before they are officially inducted into the sisterhood. This means late night meetings, interviews with active members, and learning the history of the sorority. These requirements were given to us at the beginning of the process, and we had a certain amount of time to complete them. We were also reminded of them as the deadlines for certain things, such as our service project, came up. In this way, everyone knew what was expected of them, and were able to accomplish all the goals set. If the goals had not been met in time, the final commencement would be pushed back and the candidates would wait another week to become full active members. Active members must attend weekly meetings for the chapter, where committees present what they have been working on. This way everyone is informed and aware of what all the other parts of the sorority are doing and how they function together as a whole.
Being a part of this organization means a lot to me. TBS is affiliated with the band, so we all share a love of music. It's also a place where the relationships between the members are very strong and everyone knows that they are welcome, and included. That sense of emotional security is, in my opinion, essential for a well functioning group. It is important for me to be involved in the Theta chapter of Tau Beta Sigma because I can give back to the band, and form some extremely close-knit relationships with others who are also involved. It is a community that strives for the highest, and that encourages me to do the same. I am better for it.
