This work of prose encouraged students to reflect on their past and how it has shaped them throughout their life. It was based off the Where I am From Poem by George Ella Lyon, and was our first assignment of the year. There were a required five paragraphs that focused on different parts of your past such as sights and sounds. Most poems were read aloud in class before being turned in for grading.

This assignment was meant as a way for honors students to explore their own style of leadership, and decide what qualities they embody or aspire to utilize. The paper needed to be 3-4 pages long, and had to include: the individual's personal philosophy of leadership, what applications of the philosophy could be made on and off campus, and a symbol or metaphor that represents the individual's approach. My symbol was a black panther (and can be seen in the background on this web-page).

This project stemmed from the work our class did with the high school students from Hughes STEM High School. As a group, our class came up with several ideas for after school programs that could be implemented at the high school. These programs were meant to benefit the kids intellectually while also being fun. Some of the other ideas included a book club, a programming club, and a mentorship program. The group that I was in decided to work on an after school program that taught kids how to read music. We named this program Melody Makers. For this assignment a proposal, an outline, and a PowerPoint had to be made and then presented to the class.
